A Denver Maternity Shoot

Hello! As I’ve been up dating my website recently, I’ve had the joy of revisiting some of my old shoots, which has given me the absolute pleasure of reminiscing on this sweet maternity shoot for my beautiful older sister, Ashleigh, in Denver, Colorado.

This is back from her pregnancy with her first child, Miss Liza, where I thankfully got to take a few days for her baby shower and of course, maternity photos, back in October of 2023.

I love doing maternity photos and Ashleigh came to me wanting a chic, city-vibe shoot. We settled on shooting at Union Station and I made way out to Colorado with my camera bag in tow.

Whenever I get the chance to shoot in a new location, I will usually go scout it out to get a feel for the area, places to set up, and generally just get a good idea of what I’m working with. Even though I was going in blind, which was a little intimidating, I was excited to make Ashleigh’s vision come to life.

The results turned out to be some of my favorite maternity photos I’ve ever taken! Kevin and Ash were dressed impeccably and it was giving big-money country between the all black fits, the cowboy boots, and of course, the hat.

Union Station had so many interesting elements - from the sconce lighting and arched windows inside, to the masonry and train platform outside. Shooting here was a dream and I love how the images turned out.

There’s just something about shooting at a location that is not only visually interesting, but also has a long history, that I love as a self-described history nerd.

The station, which originally opened in 1881, experienced an electrical fire in 1891, and then a major remodel in 1914. I also learned that Union Station used to welcome about 50,000 people a DAY at its peak back in the 1940s.

Although the decrease in the popularity of train travel eventually led to the eventual revitalization of Union Station as a more shopping focused hub (in 2014), I love the historical feel of the station that gives visitors a glimpse into the past.

It also makes me long for a better train system in the United States because I would love to have the option of train travel, which I think would be so much fun with my own kiddos now. What a cool way that would be to see the country!

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to create such beautiful images with my sister and brother-in-law. As time goes on, I truly cherish these special moments with my family. Although we all live far apart, it’s such a blessing to have these memories to look back on and have the photos to document big changes happening.

I think that’s one of my favorite things of being the designated family photographer - I might have to haul my gear across the country a few times a year, sometimes for weddings and babies, and other times for reunions, but to have a visual record of these moments makes it all worth it.
